The Website Helps People Reconnect with

 Wolves.

Over the past month as more people have discovered the website and as old volunteers & visitors who live across world have reconnected to the wolves through the website, we have received several wonderful and heartfelt letters. We would like to share a couple of them with you here:

"Hello,   My name is David.  I came across Saint Francis site by accident...or was it?  It brought back memories that have been kept inside for so long.  Over 20 years ago, I was hunting for deer and was surprised by a large Silver Wolf. We stood and stared at each other. As I sat My rifle down, the feelings relaxed and the Wolf came closer, not threatening, but as if to say that it meant no harm as I did.  Watching the video and slide shows of the Wolves and everyone else there, it became very clear the work that is being done there. I spent several years reading and studying and finally being accepted by a Mentor who was a Wolf Shaman. I later was given the name 'Nashobachonska'...I was told it meant "Wolf Heart". The Wolf has always been a source of peace for Me, a ways and means to think and behave in this world and I just wanted to thank you and all those involved....Thank you!        Sincerely, David"

"No-one who has ever been involved with the rescue of wolves wants to see them in any type of captivity. The only wolves we could see in the wild would be those in Yellowstone National Park, wearing radio collars. (Nearly all of the wolves on calendars and in other photographs are captive wolves with computer generated backgrounds.)

Unfortunately, like so many so-called exotic or native species, there is a hard core segment of the population which continues to want to "own" them, for display, macho gratification, or whatever... This is particularly true for the wolf-dog, who really should not exist at all, and cannot survive in the wild.

I think we would all be happy if there were no need for sanctuaries, or rescue groups! But since it is a sad fact of life that there are many poachers with a built-in market of buyers for wolf cubs, and people who make a living breeding wolf-dogs, it is particularly gratifying to see what a wonderful job the St. Francis Sanctuary is doing.

The wolves and wolf-dogs are healthy, happy and pampered in their forever home - which is what they truly deserve.

All the caretakers are unpaid volunteers - with 100% of donations going for the housing, feeding, medical care of the wolves, and general maintenance of the Sanctuary. I count myself lucky to be involved with the Sanctuary, and even though I no longer live in Texas, I try to visit as often as possible. It is wonderful to hear the wolves sing!"

--Gillian Hatch Carlsen

"Hi, you could say I'm a International volunteer who comes to the sanctuary once a year to be with my very much loved 4-footed and 2-footed friends.

I remember when Jean first acquired her first two wolves, Mystery and Khan. I was besotted with them, and felt so honored to be in such a close proximity to them both.  Then eventually along came the others, one by one. It grew to the magnificent seven, that was a year of expansion. Then the next visit I was introduced to Sable, then last but certainly not least, Rafiki.

They all have such beautiful personalities, all different from one another, but to be in their presence brings such peace to the soul. To look into their eyes you see the deep understanding, and they become our teachers.

It is for such a worthy cause that the wolf sanctuary has flourished and grown, and if you are unable to volunteer, at least visit and see how loved and well cared for these beautiful four footed brothers of ours.

A lot of love and selflessness of spirit and body is given daily to these magnificent animals."

Mystery Gets the Upper Hand...

Written By Janet Luxner     Picture by Laura Moriarity   --June 2007

This is definitely a lesson in paying attention when around the wolves.  I was happily doing my weekend volunteering of which one particular pleasure is 'walking wolves.'  That is, if any of us indeed walk them and not the other way around.  Anyway, I had already walked Duchess, Rafiki, Lobo and watched as Sable was walked.  Now it was Yoda's turn and as usual he knew it and had put himself into the chute waiting to be put on the leash.

Now as always, I shut the gate between the enclosure and the chute so that Mystery and Yoda were separated.  This way I could walk right in with Yoda and place the leash on him without having to watch for Mystery.  As everyone knows, Mystery gets quite put out that Yoda leaves for 15 minutes or so without her since she is not leashable.  Everyone also knows that you have to watch where you stand and how close you are to the gate when you enter the chute as Mystery will reach through with her paws or try to grab your clothes or the leash with her teeth.

As a trained, experienced volunteer I always watch for these things - except that I didn't - and as I was unlocking the padlock in order to enter, I allowed the leash to dangle too close to the fence and Mystery saw her chance.  She grabbed the leash and pulled one end through.  I still had the other end and I pulled  too, but she had the rope in her mouth and was pulling with all her might.  Mystery is extremely strong and I was having a difficult time holding on, especially since part of what I had in my hand was the chain collar. It was digging into my hand but I dare not let go as Mystery would have taken off with it and we might not have been able to take Yoda and the other wolves for a walk for awhile.

Well, we have several strong, capable male volunteers and as I called for help I really expected to see one or more rushing to my aid.  However, when I looked around I saw them standing a fair distance off, not moving - just grinning.  Then I saw the other volunteers and visitors doing much the same.  One of the girls even took the time to snap a picture.   I was like - "Ok you guys, I really need some help here."  My sister was finally the only one who came to help and it took both of us pulling with all our might to finally get that leash away from Mystery.

Everyone seemed to find my mistake quite amusing (and I guess it was).  Mystery had a great time and was very proud of herself for having finally fooled me.  She stood back, looked at me with those incredible eyes and mentally reminded me that she was quicker and stronger and that she would take the opportunity again in the future to remind me should I leave that split-second window open for her.

This was a harmless lesson (and, it would seem, quite an amusing one to all who witnessed it). But it should also serve as a reminder to us that we must all truly be aware of what we are doing always and never get comfortable in any of our daily work routines at the sanctuary.

After the everyone stopped joking, I did successfully enter the chute and put the leash on Yoda.  He went for a nice walk and Mystery sang her heart out as usual until he returned.

Success at Spring Bark!

Written by Barbara Robertson

First, BIG THANKS! to everyone for their help!

I was so glad that the weather gods cooperated and this 3rd try for the Spring Bark became a reality. It was a bit warmer than I would have liked [here in The Woodlands, Texas] but think we all survived.

We collected about $80 in donations / t-shirt sales / "people" massages by Joni, which was great & much more than at the previous events like this.

We had lots of people stopping by with great interest in the existence of the sanctuary and our wolves. Hopefully we will see some new volunteers and sponsors.

Come Celebrate Our  FIFTH

 Anniversary

"Five years, has it really been that long? It seems like yesterday when Mystery was making her first appearance in my life and starting a chain of events that has brought us so far so quickly.  It is truly amazing how one animal can change the course of ones life, not to mention the other 14 animals that have followed and added so much. "
