Mystery

Hello friends, I am Mystery.

I was born a free wolf and lived in the wilds of Texas for several years.

One day on my journey, I  stepped on a trap that closed around my right paw and ankle. I was terrified and in so much pain. I tried to get loose but the teeth of the evil steel trap just dug in deeper, until I almost lost my paw.

I was resting, trying to regain my strength to attempt to escape when several humans approached me. Never having encountered a human before, I hoped that they were here to help, but I was wrong. They spoke to each other and seemed to come to an agreement. One of them then raised a long stick like object at me.

What happened next is very fuzzy to me, but I remember hearing this horrible sound. The loudest sound I had ever heard in the woods, like it was the end of the world.

I guess I went to sleep for awhile. Because when I woke up, the men, with what I now know is called a rifle, were gone.

I felt pain as I have never experienced before. I had been shot in my side and I knew that I had to get help soon.

In pain and scared, I heard a call from fellow kindred.  They were telling me to come to them and I would be safe and get help there.

When I tried to find them I discovered that there was a long fence barring me from them. I later found out that it was a sanctuary for wolves.

I needed to be with them, to join them, to be saved. So, with everything that was left in me, I began to dig my way under that barricade.

Once more, people arrived. But these people were different. They were calming and generated a feeling of welcome and love towards me. I was still very scared of them, since my experiences with humans up to now were connected with a lot of pain.

This becomes very fuzzy as well…I remember flashes of places very alien to me. Loud machine noises, smells of chemicals and blood, a lot of people, a lot of movement, and a lot of pain.

The place I ended up at was a Veterinary Hospital. I was immediately taken to surgery, where a great doctor and his staff repaired my paw and took good care of me.

One day, I remember waking up one day in a small pen at the Animal Hospital and there was a beautiful spirit standing before me. She was in the shape of a human, but her soul was one of peace and love.  She told me her name was Jean. I felt a bonding of our souls and knew I would be safe.

My recovery back to health was long, but I had this amazing spirit to guide me, nurture me and visit me daily.  When I became strong enough to walk and could start taking care of myself, she spoke to me through her thoughts and heart.

“I have a home for you. One where you will be loved, honored, and taken care of. You are safe now.”

I saw this new place in her thoughts and knew she was speaking the truth. I accepted her invitation and traveled with her to this new place.   When I arrived, I knew it from the moment that I smelled the air and saw the land…this was to be my HOME.

I am now fully recovered and have full function of my paw. I love to run and dig with my human companions. These humans, as well as the other rescued wolves, have become my family… my pack.

I have learned to forgive and to accept my past – for while there is no excuse for the pain and terror I experienced, it was through that chain of events that I was brought here - to a place where I am happy and have learned that humans have an enormous capacity for love, acceptance, generosity and a fierce will for justice.

I have been at the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary since 2002, all the while having my own pen. This past winter (January of 2006), however, another of my kind was brought here to live. Each of our pens was designed to accommodate two of us.

While I have never really needed a pen mate before, my human companions asked my permission to allow another wolf to live with me. I was introduced to Yoda - a youthful male who melted my heart with his exuberant hello and a playful bow and kiss.

We are now life companions and enjoy being together. He keeps me young and I teach him patience and manners. My life is filled with great joy and love.

Please, I invite you to visit us here at the Sanctuary and share in the love and spiritual knowledge that resides here. Learn how to truly "Dance with Wolves" and add your voice with ours in song!
